Severance: Rita Duffy’s Paintings and the Affective Arctic

Fionna Barber

In late 2010 the Northern Irish artist Rita Duffy travelled to the far north of Norway to undertake a residency in Kysten arts centre just outside Tromsø, the result of an invitation by the Nordic Irish Studies Network in conjunction with their biennial conference at Tromsø University. The work that ensued from this visit, a series of paintings and drawings that reveal the continued need for a gendered perspective on conflict and its legacies, has so far lacked critical attention.
